If you are a nature lover, you will most certainly want to include a stop by Cape Point Nature Reserve on your agenda while visiting the Cape Town area. The Cape Point Nature Reserve became a conservation area in 1938. Table Mountain National Park was incorporated into the area in 1998. Today, the conservation area is located in a city that is home to more than 3 million people.
The peninsula is well known for its extensive variety of flora and fauna, much of which is unique to the area. The scenery that surrounds the area is also absolutely breathtaking, so do make sure that you bring your camera along with because you will definitely want to take pictures of your trip.
In addition to the flora and fauna that is contained inside the conversation mission, a wide variety of endangered species are also protected within its confines. There are four different whale species as well as four tortoise species, three species of dolphin, seventeen species of limpets, 250 species of birds and more than 1,000 species of fynbos.
From Cape Town, the drive to the conservation mission will take you about forty-five minutes. From the city bowl, you will need to turn left after the M3. After that, drive along the eastern coast as it follows the peninsula.
After arriving at the park, you will notice there are numerous trails. These are truly among the best ways to see everything that the park has to offer. If you are a birder, you will certainly enjoy the opportunity to see birds that typically nest along the beach. In addition, you are also likely to see sedentary lizards sunbathing on the rocks near the beach as well as tortoises as the move around in the bush.
Among other sights that simply must be seen is the old lighthouse that is situated on the reserve and offers panoramic views of both coastlines as well as the entire point. The walk up to the lighthouse is somewhat steep, but it is definitely worth it. Of course, if you are feeling slightly winded you might want to pay the small fee for the tram that will deliver you to the top in just a couple of minutes.
When its time to dine, you certainly will not want to miss the opportunity to dine at the Two Oceans restaurant. The restaurant is situated at the bottom of the path that leads to the lighthouse and overlooks the incredible expanse of False Bay. The restaurant boasts an a la carte menu that is spectacular and well known for its world class cuisine. This is the ideal location for simply sitting back, enjoying your visit and relaxing.
